Walrus Workout

Welcome and Happy New Year from Girl Talk 2014. Right out of the gate this year, I thought this might be an appropriate video to show and discuss. We’re all focused on our New Year’s Resolutions such as LOSING WEIGHT. Do you want to look good in those workout clothes? That’s the usual motive. We do it every year and every year there is the same question; do you actually reach that goal? Why not take a new avenue to wonderland and set a goal to have a healthier lifestyle instead of following a diet. Check out this video.

It’s not about how big Ms. Walrus is, it’s about her delight in taking action to keep healthy. Healthy means having mind, body and spirit all in optimal alignment. That’s not to say that size doesn’t matter at all. The health risks associated with obesity are well documented: increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer. But what you don’t hear very often is that you can reduce these risks by being physically active, even if you don’t lose weight. One reason for that is that some standard weight and size measurements, such as body mass index (BMI), are somewhat accurate predictors of health risks but not necessarily how healthy you as an individual are. BMI, for example, doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscle, and it doesn’t measure visceral fat — the fat surrounding abdominal organs. Visceral abdominal fat is a significant risk factor for heart disease and metabolic syndrome. So some people with a healthy BMI who carry their weight around their middle may actually be less healthy than people labeled overweight who have better fat distribution. If you notice, our friend in the video, Ms. Walrus, looks pretty much well distributed. No matter where you fit in the BMI category, it is the attitude that Ms. Walrus displays that is healthy. She is is willing to get out and groove and move to the music. That girl has has Chutzpah and that”s what matters. Along with the help of her fitness trainer, she will reach her goal by showing up and being accounted for. In my book that’s a WooHoo and Whop Whop!!.

If you can overcome the obstacles that leave your activewear gathering dust…… OH MY, then regular physical activity provides an impressive array of health benefits regardless of your size. Thirty minutes of moderate activity each day (or at least 4 or 5 days a week) can help to:

Reduce high blood pressure
Prevent heart disease
Reduce prostate cancer risk
Reduce risk of stroke
Lower cholesterol levels
Elevate endorphins and mood
Decrease anxiety and reduce depression
Reduce total and visceral fat
Improve cardiovascular function
Reduce risk of colon cancer
Reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and improve bone strength if you have it.
Reduce risk of developing type 2 diabetes & improve insulin resistance in those who have it
Alleviate insomnia

Did you know it takes 21 days to form a habit? Whether it be good or bad, it’s that repetition for 21 days that translates into a new lifestyle. In a nut shell or whatever shell you prefer, let’s make 2014 a healthier lifestyle year. I’m banking on you to join with me and Ms. Walrus to make that change!
