Lunch Time Workout for Women

My fav time to workout has always been “out of bed and into the locker room” time. But for those who dread the morning sweats, the middle of your day might be the best time to work out. So take your lunch hour and add some exercise to it. It will not only help with “on the job stresses”, but it will give you a break to recharge and go back to  work with a better attitude. I know cramming a sweat session into your lunch hour often involves some serious logistics, but with a little planning if you leave your desk at noon, it shouldn’t create stresses of its own. So I went to some of my BFF and asked for their suggestions on the tried and true ways to go about getting their sweat on during their lunch break!

Lunchtime Workout

Before Heading to the Gym

Time your meals and snacks so your stomach isn’t growling or stuffed when you hit the gym.  One to two hours before working out, have a carb-packed snack. Think of it like a mini second breakfast. Girlfriends suggestion: peanut butter on crackers

Save time by wearing workout wear that easily doubles as everyday clothing to skim minutes off your pre-workout locker-room time. Just be sure to pack fresh clothes for heading back to the office.

Power walk to the gym to jump-start your warm up and get the thought of working out in your mind. I use this time to take off my jewelry and put on my heart-rate-monitor watch. Girlfriends suggestions: Wear your Turn It On gear: looks great and doubles as a workout outfit and office outfit.

Locker-Room Prep

Having a well-organized gym bag is the key to a quick change. I like pockets in my gym bag, but not too many. Too many means holding more things and more things confuses the mind. Simple and easy can seriously cut down on the frantic nature of changing. If you have long hair, opt for a cute braided up-do that works for both the office and the gym. A well-placed braid will save time before your workout. No fussing required to put your hair up. After your workout, you can skip the long washing and drying routine that keeps you stuck in the locker room. Girlfriends suggestions: With Turn It On workout wear for women, all you have to do is switch out shoes and take off jewelry and out you go to the studio.

The Workout

Most gyms offer quick and awesome 30- to 45-minute fitness classes between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Since the CDC recommends 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, these shorter classes help fulfill this requirement and get you back to your desk quickly. Girlfriends suggestions: The gyms and us girls love the unity of women coming together and sweating with each other. Sweat and hate loves company you know.

Multitask! Find a circuit class that will keep your heart rate elevated to burn calories while you strength train to build muscle. Girlfriends suggestions: Women are the best multitaskers, so take advantage of what’s in your gym and go for it. Have the plan already set up in your mind prior to arriving.

Go intense! Head to an abbreviated spin class. Indoor-cycling teachers can pack a calorie-burning workout into three-quarters of an hour. Girlfriends suggestions: They call spinning the three S’s workout: spinning, sweating and swearing. You gotta love my girlfriends.

If you’re in a cardio mood, maximize your treadmill time with interval workouts. Playing with the speed burns more calories than working at a steady pace. Girlfriends suggestions: Try to get treadmills side by side with a friend—-makes the time pass more quickly.

Getting Back to Work

Let’s face it, getting in line for a shower during the lunchtime rush is almost as competitive as finding a spin bike. Once in the locker room, don’t waste time changing out of your clothes. Grab a towel and head directly into the shower line before it grows too long. Just strip down right before it’s your turn to clean up. I also like to use my time waiting in line to stretch, which is much easier in workout wear than a towel. Girlfriends suggestions: Shower from the neck down, leaving the make-up on so you don’t have to reapply. Pack extra Turn It On gear, whip it on, heels back on, jewelry back on and you’re out of there in nothing flat!

Once back to work dig in to your nutritious post-workout lunch while getting your desk ready for the afternoon rush. Make sure you pack the proper amounts of carbs and protein to recover from your quick sweat session. Girlfriends suggestions: Pack the lunch so that it doesn’t give a reason to stop on the way back to the office for that yummy thing that’s hanging out in the bakery window!

Whew, there you have it, a tried and true story on how to sweat, eat properly and look great going to during and from the gym. Try it, you’ll like it!
