5 Easy Ways to Cut Your Sugar Intake

This is just so totally crazy, but how can something so sweet and delish be so bad? When it comes to sugar, let’s face it, it’s just bad. It’s as addictive as checking messages on your cell and likely to add those lovely lumps on your butt. Glute Gloom, NOT!


Americans eat more than 22 teaspoons of sugar each day, according to the American Heart Association. That’s nearly 84 pounds of sugar per year. Don’t you just hate the dirty details?

So let’s take a look at how we can cut down on the sweet white stuff without going into withdrawal, and also figure out how we lovely tiny Sweetnesses can forge on and live life without massive quantities of it.

Cutting out sugar doesn’t have to be as hard as watching the last Breaking Bad episode. Here are some easy ways to do it.

1.Use half the amount of sugar in a dessert recipe. Replace the other half with applesauce or pureed prunes. Now I have done this and even replaced all the sugar with dates and you can’t tell the difference. Not even my sweetie tooth husband can tell.

2. Switch your cereal to one that has less than 8 grams of sugar per serving. Double smooches if you can switch to one with no added sugars at all, that’s the real goal. Next, add Mother Nature to your bowl—strawberries, raspberries and bananas. You score like a rock star on this one.

3. Skip the cosmos, Carrie Bradshaw. Stick to beer, wine, or liquor mixed with unsweetened seltzer and you’ll never miss the sugar since the BUZZ will still be there! Ok, if this sounds BORING, and you love your adult libation and are not willing to give it up, acquire a taste for martini’s, just not the sugary ones. Boy do I love my Tangueray Ten martini with blue cheese stuffed olives! Who needs a cosmo when you can have that?

4. Refrain from keeping sugary foods in your purse, office drawer, and/or home. This is great advice and it works at our home. If it’s there, it’s gone in one foul swallow. People look in our cupboards and say “where’s the food”? This is especially true of ice cream. No reason to tempt yourself by keeping it around. It’s kind of like going into the shoe department when you really don’t need shoes. Know what I mean?

5. Eat a piece of fruit, such as an apple, grapes, or berries when you have a craving for something sweet. If this doesn’t satisfy your sweet craving, go for a cookie. Are you kidding me? But it has to be a special cookie. Cookies are a staple in our home. My husband has a sweet tooth, and I’ve found his perfect soother. Cookies from our Farmers’ Market. You guessed it, they are sweetened with just a little honey. They are all natural and oh so fresh. He can eat one of those little buggers, not gain weight and it makes him one happy camper. There are plenty of low cal/low sugar cookie recipes out there.  Find one that suits your fancy and go for it.
